Description
Vintage American Flyer K5375W Chief Diesel Passenger Set with the chromed 4713 (470/471/473) Santa Fe Alco PA/PB/PA Locomotives. This 1953 Chief Diesel Passenger Train set was the first Santa Fe set to take advantage of the new open pilot on the PA units that allowed the use of couplers on both ends.
This set includes the above mentioned Santa Fe locomotives and four chromed plastic lighted, silhouetted, streamlined passenger cars, the 960 “
COLUMBUS
” combine, the 961 “
JEFFERSON
” coach, the 962 “
HAMILTON
” vista dome, and the 963 “
WASHINGTON
” observation car.
With couplers at both ends of the locomotive, the PA/PB/PA arrangement could be put together in S-Gauge for the first time.
The 470 powered PA unit housed a motor for each truck, a four position reverse unit, and an operating headlight.
The 471 PB unit housed an air-chime whistle while the 473 dummy had an operating headlight.
The four silhouetted passenger cars are chrome finished with no color bands.
The car body is fluted and highly detailed with roof vents and rectangular indents and other details.
These cars had more details than the extruded aluminum cars of prior years because plastic-injection molding allowed more detail to be represented.
There is some paint rubbed off on all three engines.
The 473 PA unit is also missing its horn. The 961 coach has the American Flyer Lines rubbed off on both sides. The engines and four cars appear to me to be in Very Good condition, especially since they are chromed.
Please refer to the pictures to determine the condition.
This set has been in a collection for over 50 years so I’m certain it will require some TLC and since I have no means to test this engine I cannot guarantee that it operates or lights up. S

Photos tell much more than words. I make an effort to include well lighted photos that are bright and clear that show many different angles. The photos show much detail and are the most important part of the description. I will also provide a reasonable detailed description of what I have found through research as an addition to the photos. Between the two you should be able to ascertain what you are bidding on. Should you have any questions or need additional information, please ask in advance before submitting a bid or making an offer.
